Milkvetch Root, also known as Astragalus, is a general term for plants and Chinese medicinal materials. The plant Astragalus is produced in Inner Mongolia, Shanxi, Gansu, Heilongjiang and other places, and is a national third-level protected plant. Astragalus membranaceus, a traditional Chinese medicinal material, is the root of Astragalus mongolica and Astragalus membranaceus, which have the functions of invigorating qi and strengthening the surface, diuresis and swelling, detoxifying and discharging pus, and promoting muscle growth. The medicinal use of Astragalus has a history of more than 2,000 years. Modern research shows that Astragalus contains saponins, sucrose, polysaccharides, various amino acids, folic acid, selenium, zinc, copper and other trace elements. It can enhance the immune function of the body, protect the liver, diuretic, anti-aging, anti-stress, lower blood pressure and have a wide range of antibacterial effects. However, it must be forbidden to take if there are excessive evils on the surface, stagnation of qi and dampness, stagnation of food accumulation, carbuncle and gangrene at the beginning or after ulceration, heat and toxin still prevailing, and those with yin deficiency and yang hyperactivity.

There are about 2,000 species of Astragalus, which are produced in subtropical and temperate regions of the world except Oceania, but mainly in the north temperate zone. There are more than 270 species produced in China, distributed from northeast to southwest. Astragalus is produced in North China, Northeast China, Inner Mongolia and Northwest China. It is mainly produced in Shanxi, Heilongjiang, Liaoning, Hebei and other provinces. It is also distributed in Sichuan, the former Soviet Union, North Korea and Mongolia. Astragalus membranaceus is mainly distributed in Northeast China, North China, Gansu, Sichuan, Tibet and other provinces; Astragalus membranaceus is mainly produced in Inner Mongolia, Shanxi and Heilongjiang; it is now widely cultivated.
